I grew up with the Marvel Universe spanning from comics, video games, and the movies. While the MCU became a staple point in latter years thanks to The Avengers, prior to that it was Spider-Man, X-Men, Hulk, and Fantastic Four that gave me my love for the universe. In regards to comics, some of the characters that were at the forefront for me were Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool. As a character, Deadpool always amazed me, maybe its because of our similarity in obscure pop culture references or how he felt so different compared to the other characters I loved. By the time the films came around, I was enthralled with this character and always wanted to see more specifically to see him interact with the wider Marvel Universe.
Deadpool & Wolverine was a fan's dream come true. It's a love letter to fans of the Fox films. The team-up of Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) was an anticipated one for years that was thought impossible due to 2017's Logan killing off Wolverine. What we get is a multiversal story that not only brings back a different version of Wolverine but also other heroes including Blade (Wesley Snipes), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), X-23 (Dafne Keen), Gambit (Channing Tatum), and The Human Torch (Chris Evans). While the mention of all those superheroes may make this film appear bloated, each character has an important role in the film with its theme on second chances.

Second chances is the summary of what Deadpool & Wolverine is. Wade Wilson has given up being a superhero and is trying to live a normal life, however he is now given a second chance to be not just a hero but to save the people he loves. Logan is a failure of a hero, he abandoned the X-Men to get drunk and indirectly led to all of them dying and his actions after making him more of a villain. He is now given a second chance to be the hero that he wanted to be. Elektra and The Human Torch get second chances to redeem themselves after their movies being critically panned. Gambit is given a second chance after his own film was canned. Blade is given a second chance to redeem himself after bad sequels. X-23 is given a second chance, not to redeem herself but to finally get a father figure out of Wolverine who she watched die in 2017's Logan. Through this theme, you get the emotional stakes of the film in a way that could only work in this film due to the meta humor of Deadpool.

The story is simple, Deadpool has to save his universe from being destroyed due to the death of their "anchor being", in turn he ends up in The Void with Wolverine as the two go on a road trip to escape and stop the Time Variance Authority. Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) works as a physical villain to the heroes to cover up for the true antagonist which is this area of TVA, a group that had been seen as crucially important during the Loki series. Despite simplicity, the film allows its characters to evolve and gives plenty of time for banter and fighting.
Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine does exactly what it set out to do, it gives audiences the teamup they wanted and more. Despite a multiversal story to integrate these characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's still able to stand on its own without the help of the MCU.
